And Magpies supporters, led by the popular Toon Polls account, heaped in the comments with the same bizarre response: Nick Pope.

Burger King then tweeted the name of the England goalkeeper and it soon snowballed.

And that led to Pope overtaking Joan of Arc as the top trend in Britain.

Walkers, Deliveroo, Domino’s, Specsavers, Quality Street and Dreams all followed suit.

Newcastle travel to Brighton tomorrow where the 30-year-old will play his second game for the Mags since joining from Burnley.

And McDonald’s tweeted, “Okay…if Nick Pope keeps a clean sheet tomorrow we’ll send Toon Polls a Maccies breakfast next week, deal?”

The Toon Polls admin said: “A few weeks ago I ran a poll to get Pope to beat (Erling) Haaland as best signing

“So now just getting people to respond to a random poll saying he’s better than a tomato and a cucumber.”

Newcastle supporters were also delighted, with one tweet: “So @ToonPolls hijacked a straightforward Burger King tweet saying ‘Nick Pope’ and now he’s number one on Twitter and being tweeted by McDonald’s, Specsavers and many more .

“Football Twitter is amazing at times.”

Another said: “I can’t believe what I’m seeing. The Twitter verse drove Nick Pope crazy!”

While another fan tweeted: “A Newcastle Twitter account got Newcastle fans tweeting Nick Pope about a Burger King post. NUFC Twitter is unmatched>”

Another added, “Toon polls said ‘Nick Pope’ under a Burger King poll and now he’s an internet sensation.”
