A statement on the club’s website read: “Newcastle United have signed goalkeeper Loris Karius on a short-term contract.”

Manager Eddie Howe added: “We’re delighted to add Loris to our goalkeeping squad.

“He’s a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European Cup experience and will provide competition and support for an important part of the season.”

The goalkeeper was a free agent after his contract with Liverpool expired at the end of last season.

The club had reportedly postponed the signing announcement due to the Queen’s death.

Karius said of the transfer: “I’m excited. It’s a good opportunity for me and a great project to be a part of. It didn’t take me long to make a decision.

“Newcastle have a great manager and play really attractive football. I felt it was the right project for me and I’m looking forward to working with the managers and my new team-mates.”

Karius started his career at Mainz but is best remembered at Anfield where he made 49 appearances, including playing and howling in the Champions League final in 2018.

They drew 3-1 at Real Madrid, with the German at fault for two goals as he infamously threw the ball wide to parry Karim Benzema and then deflected Gareth Bale’s long-range effort.

He was then loaned out to Besiktas and spent last season away at Union Berlin.

Newcastle needed a new backup stopper to compete with first choice Nick Pope after current No.2 Karl Darlow picked up an injury.

Darlow is believed to be out with an ankle ligament damage which will reportedly keep him in the treatment room until the World Cup, which begins in November.

The toon had also reportedly held talks with ex-Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster.

But Howe has chosen Karius and he is on a short-term deal that runs until January.

When the Premier League returns this weekend, Newcastle will welcome Bournemouth.
