The newest of them is Johnson, the owner of the NFL’s franchise, according to ESPN.

It is claimed that the 74-year-old is ‘ready to bid’ for the club, after having been contacted by The Raine Group.

New York-based investment bank Raine Group has been tasked with finding the right buyer by Abramovich.

Johnson alone has a reported net worth of around £4.3 billion.

He is said to have become a fan of the Blues while living in London and serving as ambassador to the US.

If Johnson’s attempt to buy Chelsea succeeds, he will join the growing list of NFL owners who have invested in a Premier League team.

Stan Kroenke owns both Arsenal and Super Bowl champions LA Rams, while the Glazer family owns both Manchester United and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Elsewhere, a private Saudi-backed consortium is also said to have ‘registered interest’ in buying The Blues.

The group, led by Saudi Media, has contacted the Raine Group about a potential purchase, according to Goal.

Saudi Media helps fund various media, advertising and sports brands worldwide, but the individuals behind the consortium remain unknown at this stage.

Part of their work is devoted to the ‘Pan-Arab broadcasting market’, with Pan-Arabism being a political movement.

However, Chelsea are said to have reservations about selling to a ‘politically sensitive’ party.

Plus the takeover will not get the green light if the Saudi Media group sponsors it publicly.

The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund already owns Newcastle, and will therefore not be allowed to take charge of Chelsea either.

Of the 300 people reported to have expressed interest in the Blues, at least 10 are believed to be trustworthy.

Johnson and Saudi Media join the likes of UFC star Conor McGregor and ‘Moneyball’ genius Billy Beane as potential buyers of the European Champion.
