New York Islanders complete an incredibly rare athletic feat, ending the Pittsburgh Penguins’ amazing streak

The New York Islanders made sports history after earning a postseason berth with a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.

And with the Islanders’ victory, the Penguins were eliminated from the playoffs.
The Penguins failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2006, ending a 16-year postseason.

It was also the longest active playoff streak in the NBA, NFL, and MLB.


The last time a local New York sports team won a championship was in 2012 when the Giants won Super Bowl XLVI.
And there was plenty to cheer about the last time all five local New York NBA and NHL teams made the playoffs in 1994.

The Knicks would lose to the Houston Rockets in seven games in the NBA Finals.
By 2023, Rangers appear to be contenders for the championship, having made it to the conference finals last season.
In the first round, they could face the Devils, who defeated the Rangers in the playoffs in 2012.
The Islanders would face the record-breaking Boston Bruins with 63 regular-season wins in the first round when the Panthers defeat the Hurricanes on Thursday.
The Knicks meet the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday, who are looking to win their first playoff series since 2013.
The Nets meet the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.
