Defense contractor Raytheon worked with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on this project.

The swarms of drones have been dubbed “Attack Swarm Enabled Tactics” (OFFSET).

A swarm is said to include 130 physical drones and 30 simulators.

Raytheon has announced successful trials in a Press Release.

“Using integrated swarm technology developed by a team led by Raytheon BBN, a single operator successfully piloted a swarm — including 130 physical drone platforms,” it said. management and 30 simulated drone platforms – both indoors and outdoors in urban settings.”

It says that piloting the drone requires “minimum training”.

The drones are controlled using a virtual reality interface that allows a commander to see what each drone is looking at.

This is supposed to create an “interactive virtual view of the environment”.

Shane Clark, principal investigator for OFFSET at Raytheon, said: “You can look out the back of the building to access a view of the drone locations and use the virtual reality environment to test and see if your mission is possible.”

The swarm of drones can also be controlled using a voice interface that allows for voice commands.

This was added to allow an operator to act quickly.

Clark added: “Our software is smart enough to assign the right drones to the appropriate task group.

“For example, if the mission is to survey a building, multiple drones will be dispatched to each survey part of the building.”
