New interim coach Ralf Rangnick wants Man Utd to play with more ‘balance and control’ after scoring too many goals

MANCHESTER UNITED fans may have cheered at the 3-2 win over Arsenal, but Ralf Rangnick grimaced.
Thursday’s game at Old Trafford summed up the roller coaster ride the club have been on – now Rangnick believes it’s time for calm and control.
The new interim manager said: “Against Arsenal, we conceded two goals, we needed three to win the game.
“If you look at the total number of goals conceded, it averages close to two goals per game. This is just too much.
“My approach is to help the team be more balanced, control the game more.
“The Arsenal game is very exciting for the fans, but even for me as a future coach, it’s not the kind of game we need every day.
“For me, football is about minimizing the element of coincidence and having control to gain control of the game.
“This is football, what is it about. This is my approach and I want to help these talented, brilliant players try to stay away from their goals. ”

Rangnick has been watching United from afar for several weeks now and can see the obvious flaws in the team and what he must do to get things on track.
The German said: “Obviously, I watched the latest matches.
“I watched not only the Arsenal game but also the Watford and Chelsea games on TV, when I didn’t know when I would be contacted in the following days.
“I watched, out of interest, the matches against Liverpool and Manchester City.
“I am quite aware and familiar with what is happening here with the club and in the Premier League.
“I think it is clear that the team has a lot of talent, young, talented players but also enough experienced players in the team.
“My main goal for the next few days and weeks is to bring more balance to the team.
“I think to gain control of future games you have to be proactive, regardless of whether we have the ball or another team has the ball.
“It’s about helping the team play together. It’s about solidarity, it’s also about teamwork.
“We saw that in the game against Arsenal. If you compare the two halves, the first half and the second half, against Arsenal, they are completely different.
“Obviously it’s not easy, I can’t do it in one or two training sessions, not even in a week or two.
“It’s not about pressing or counter-attacking for the sake of pressing, it’s about being in control.
“This is the main goal.
“The players have to come with me, they have to not only follow my instructions but also have to trust that I can show them how we should play in the future. That’s what it’s all about.
“It has to happen step by step. It can’t be done within a day or two like this.
“It won’t work like that.”
Rangnick believes United are still grappling with the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson after eight and a half years and need more stability.
He added: “Having had Sir Alex for 27 years, winning so many trophies, I don’t think there is another club like it – maybe Guy Roux with Auxerre – like it.
“Having the same manager for 27 years is unique and special.
“For me, it is not uncommon that after such a long and successful period the club needs to find a new path. There have been changes in the leadership – five managers since Sir Alex left.
“Therefore, signing new players and sticking to the club’s DNA is also very difficult to achieve continuity.
“And I think this is very important in modern football when you do that.
“For me, it’s not uncommon for so many changes.
“And I think the board members and myself are on the same page for the future.
“It’s important that we grow and there won’t be a lot of change in management.”
Rangnick, 63, believes United have a squad that competes for fourth place in the Premier League.
But he accepts Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are now several steps ahead of them.
The former Schalke, Hoffenheim and Leipzig coach said: “If you look at the top three teams right now, they seem very stable and have top coaches, maybe some of the best coaches. world.
“And if you see the way they play and the way they win in style, in control of the game, then this is something that we have to develop. But when Jurgen arrived at Liverpool, the squad he inherited at the time was certainly not a better one than the one I inherited here now at United.
“I am very happy with the quality of the players we have here and I am sure – if we can help them improve in the areas that have brought us to where we are now – then we possible next steps can be taken. .
“That’s what it’s all about.”
