New GTA Online Update Confirms Which Original GTA 5 Ending Is Canon’s

This story contains small spoilers for GTA OnlineThe plot of The Contract.

A new update for GTA Online seems to have confirmed which of the original final three installments of Grand Theft Auto 5 are official.

According to the report of Kotaku, GTA Online’s latest update, The Contract, features dialogue that seems to confirm what happens to Michael after the end of GTA 5. As part of a new quest, you help iconic rapper Progress Dre in an effort to find and restore the lost musician. phone and a bunch of unreleased documents lying on the device.

As part of the hunt for a missing phone, Franklin ends up in a golf cart chase in a movie. In an attempt to catch up with a man who has angered the rapper, Franklin’s erratic motivation forces the character to exclaim, “Oh my god, I know one of the producers here. I hope his butt isn’t working today. While not specifically mentioning the producer’s name, it seems almost certain that Franklin is referring to Michael, who in one of GTA 5’s final installments started as a producer on the same movie.

For those unable to complete GTA 5’s campaign, the game has three different endings. While endings A and B see either Trevor or Michael die at the hands of Franklin, respectively, Alternative C ties the loose ends of the story together in a way that allows all three of the game’s main characters to survive.

Rockstar previously hinted that Option C was the game’s expected ending via a dialogue from Tao Cheng during GTA Online’s 2019 Casino and Diamonds update, alluding to the events of the year. The event takes place only in the third ending of the game. This latest update seems to reinforce that further.

While this new line of dialogue seems to eventually rule out the ending when Michael dies, an earlier update also suggested that Trevor also survived the events of GTA 5. Update Smuggler’s Run, Ron Jakowski notes that Trevor “went all over Vinewood” before indirectly referring to him as his “old boss”.

With the latest update offering the closure of GTA 5 events, fans will likely be wondering what’s next for the franchise. Although a potential sixth installment of the series is yet to be confirmed, reports earlier this year seems to suggest that the game could end in 2024. In the additional rumors surrounding the potential existence of GTA 6, some fans took to social media following rumors that Rockstar has hidden a screenshot for the game in the GTA: The Trilogy release earlier this year.
