New 50p coin to be launched to celebrate Queen’s Platinum Day next year

THE Royal Mint has announced a new 50p coin that will be launched next year to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Year.
This will be the first time a royal event has appeared on the tails of the coin and the design has even been approved by the Queen.
With the number 70 denoting the number of years the Queen reigns until 2022, her wristwatch will also be nestled within the zero as the focus of the design.
Clare Maclennan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, said: “The Royal Mint has a proud history of outstanding coins for British monarchs and 2022 sees one of the most prominent. The Queen’s biggest celebration with the upcoming Platinum Year.
“Marking 70 days until the Queen’s enthronement, the Royal Mint is pleased to unveil the anniversary Platinum Jubilee 50p design ahead of its launch in the new year.
“In recognition of the landmark event, this is the first time that a major royal milestone has been celebrated on a 50p coin and is a fitting celebration for Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.”
The new design joins the Royal Mint’s collection of commemorative crown pieces over the years, which have honored the Queen’s Silver, Gold and Diamonds.
Part of one of the largest collections carried out by the Royal Mint, the coin will be unveiled next year alongside a £5 commemorative tiara.
Coin collectors can register their hobby with the Royal Mint for a commemorative 50p piece.
