[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for NCIS Season 19 Episode 4 “Great Wide Open.”]
In “Nice Large Open,” Gibbs (Harmon) and McGee (Sean Murray) head to Alaska as a part of the investigation into the corporate that employed hitman Paul Lemere (Jason Wiles), Sonova, to take out anybody who may block them constructing a copper mine. With their work there and the others on the case again dwelling, they discover proof that Sonova’s CEO Sonia Eberhart (Valarie Pettiford) is behind it, working with the husband of one of many victims (he was in it for the cash). However to McGee’s shock, Gibbs drops a bombshell on him as he readies to move dwelling: He’s not going with him. He does’t need his badge again. Gibbs stays in Alaska! Mark Harmon simply left NCIS!
“As an govt producer and expensive good friend, Mark continues to be an integral a part of the material of the present,” govt producer and showrunner Steven D. Binder mentioned in an announcement. “Our north star has all the time been staying true to our characters, and that fact has all the time guided the tales we inform and the place these characters go. So concerning the way forward for Gibbs, as long-time followers of the present might have seen through the years…by no means depend Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”
Gibbs’ exit is foreshadowed just about from the primary scene of the episode. When FBI Particular Agent Parker (Gary Cole) leads a staff into Gibbs’ home to arrest him (for stealing a authorities car and kidnapping a suspect who later died beneath mysterious circumstances), he sees the large gap in a wall within the basement. “One thing tells me he’s not coming again,” he says. (Parker later listens to McGee’s pleas to not arrest Gibbs and is fired for his actions since his boss needed the suspended agent to pay for his actions. How quickly earlier than he will get an NCIS badge?)
“Nice Large Open” then performs like a farewell tour for Gibbs, all with a through-line: He isn’t OK, and he hasn’t been since he misplaced his spouse and daughter. It even comes up when he speaks with one of many victims’ fathers. “The ache by no means leaves your coronary heart, however neither will she,” Gibbs says. How does he get via the day? “Some days I don’t,” Gibbs admits.
Whereas he’s already in Alaska when the episode begins, flashbacks present him saying goodbye to the others (although we want Brian Dietzen’s Palmer and Diona Reasonover’s Kasie received moments, too). “It had a great run,” Vance (Rocky Carroll) says after Gibbs places his cellphone in espresso so Parker can’t observe it. (So did he.) “I needed to say thanks, Leon, for every little thing,” Gibbs tells his former boss earlier than strolling away.
Ducky (David McCallum) finds him on his away to the airport and notes simply how a lot he’s endured within the final six months (Jack and Bishop leaving, the assault, arrest and suspension, and his boat blowing up). “Milestone occasions akin to these stack up on one another and construct inside strain,” he explains. “It occurs to anybody, even you.” And whereas he’d like to listen to Gibbs inform him “there’s nothing to fret about, Duck,” neither believes it.
“You’re proper. Recently, I’ve been looking,” Gibbs confesses. “I don’t know what I’m searching for. I do know being alone with out the job, that was exhausting.” However coming again is “even more durable.” Earlier than he leaves, he makes positive Ducky is aware of, “you’re a nice good friend. I recognize you greater than .” It’s rightfully essentially the most emotional scene of the episode, given the characters’ long history.
He then has Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) drive him to the airport, and after laughing about how Gibbs received his boat out of the basement (and a number of the theories), the dialog turns to how each are doing. “I’m doing good,” Torres says, earlier than amending to, “I’m getting by. Some days are higher than others. I’ll be high quality.” Gibbs has some recommendation for him: “You’re a hell of an agent, Nick. Received instincts that don’t come alongside usually. Extra usually, you’re a good man. Do me a favor, although. Don’t let this job turn out to be all that there’s. You deal with you.”
And so it ends with Gibbs and the agent he’s watched develop from a probie to senior discipline agent to staff chief. “You’re getting there. You simply gotta discover your rhythm,” Gibbs tells McGee, and he’s clearly speaking about greater than the fishing they’re doing in Alaska. “Be affected person. It’s about progress, not perfection. As soon as the fundamentals, the remainder simply comes from inside.”
It’s not till McGee’s loaded his baggage on the aircraft that Gibbs tells him he’s not going dwelling. He’s “by no means been higher,” he says, and he doesn’t have one other boat left to construct. (He did see one on the docks earlier that clearly wants lots of work achieved.) “We’ll discover you one other interest,” McGee says, clearly not able to say goodbye. “I’m not searching for a interest,” Gibbs tells him.
So what’s he searching for? “My intestine’s telling me I’ll know once I discover it,” Gibbs says, and whereas he doesn’t know if he’ll discover it there in Alaska, “no matter I’m feeling, this sense of peace, I’ve not had this since Shannon and Kelly died, and I’m not able to let it go.”
And so comes time for the second most emotional goodbye, with McGee teary-eyed and Gibbs wanting like he has discovered that peace he mentions. “I couldn’t have hoped for anybody higher to look at my again for the previous 18 years than you, Tim,” Gibbs says. After a hug and “I like yous,” McGee makes Gibbs promise him he’s going to be OK. “I already am,” Gibbs says, and with that, McGee leaves.
And NCIS says goodbye to Mark Harmon and Gibbs — for now, we hope. It’s exhausting to think about the collection ending (at any time when it does) with out him returning. And to be trustworthy, we’re not fairly positive how we really feel proper now. However how do you are feeling? Tell us within the feedback under.
