What made your role on “NCIS: Hawaii” so exciting and what was the biggest challenge?
I think the biggest challenge for me is playing someone who has a bit of a cold exterior. Of course, I feel like a pretty empathetic person, but Kate is very career driven, and really sees the world in black and white, right and wrong, and just knows exactly what she has to do.
What’s interesting about playing with her is that she’s trying to develop relationships that aren’t just based on work, to find gray areas with people. I don’t know, but I think she’s had a pretty lonely life, and I think she’s really inspired by the team Jane Tennant has built. So that’s a really fun side to play, – trying to figure out where she fits in with everyone on her team, on Jane’s team.
Now, were you a fan of “NCIS” before taking on this role? And if so, are there any characters that you inspired Whistler to?
I haven’t actually watched any of the “NCIS” franchises. So this is my first introduction to it – getting a thrust out into the world. Since then, I’ve started watching it since it was picked up, and I think the great thing about this franchise is the fan base. It’s a show that’s been going on for 19 seasons now. It was established. And I think, with that, I’m almost glad I hadn’t seen the show before because there’s that kind of insurmountable pressure in trying to live up to something… I’m glad I avoided it. that a little bit.
Things are heating up for Kate and Lucy. Can you give us any insight into where their relationship might go?
They have a rather troubled relationship, and that’s what I love about the way these two write. They both come from different backgrounds and their approach to a relationship is also very different, but I think they are willing to learn from each other. Their communication could take a bit of work sometimes, but they are learning. They are trying to get to know each other.
Apparently, Kate is struggling with having a relationship in the work environment, while Lucy is more open to it. But there’s a bit of tenderness to Kate. Lucy embodies this beautiful side of Kate that she is beginning to embrace. It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride, and there will be ups and downs. I just said that.
