NATO warning as Putin ‘deploys world’s largest submarine’ capable of being armed with terrifying nuclear ‘apocalypse drone’

VLADIMIR Putin has deployed the world’s largest submarine capable of being armed with a terrifying nuclear “apocalypse drone,” NATO has reportedly warned.

As the tyrant urges the world into its most dangerous moment since his shambolic invasion of Ukraine, there are fears that Russia’s giant nuclear-capable torpedo is now on the warpath.

The powerful K-329 Belgorod is said to be able to trigger radioactive tsunamis and obliterate enemy shores with its Poseidon underwater drone.

The Russian Navy took delivery of the City Killer submarine – which at 604 feet is the world’s longest submarine ever built – in July after successful tests.

Details of the submarine’s high-speed underwater propulsion system, capable of speeds of 200 km/h, have long been a closely guarded Russian secret.

But NATO has now sent a chilling warning to its member states about the location of the 14,700-ton war machine, reports La Repubblica.

The Belgorod is said to be currently submerged in Arctic waters and there are fears Putin will use the mission to test the weapon for the first time.

Putin vowed to use “all means” to defend Russia’s four annexed Ukrainian regions as he ramps up his nuclear threats and his invasion enters an unpredictable new phase.

The Belgorod has previously been hailed as a “game changer” for Putin’s navy after suffering a series of humiliations in the Ukraine war.

The Kremlin said the monster submarine will carry up to eight Poseidons, each 79 feet long, ready to unleash Armageddon.

Defense expert HI Sutton told La Reppubblica: “It is a completely new type of weapon that will force western navies to change their planning and develop new countermeasures.”

First announced in 2015, some thought the Poseidon would not come to fruition – but she quietly put to sea for the first time last year amid threats of sinking British and US warships in the Black Sea.

It was reportedly in development before the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The revolutionary design – based on the Oscar II class cruise missiles – has been extensively modified to specialize in covert missions.

The sub was extended to its enormous length so it could carry the devastating nuclear-tipped Poseidon torpedoes, piloted by artificial intelligence.

Eerie footage of a successful Poseidon “field test” last year showed the weapon being fired by soldiers on a submarine, showing green waves as the supposed aftermath of the blast.

The nuclear bomb can be dropped from a submarine or ship onto the seabed and zoom past underwater defenses at reported speeds of between 70 and 125 knots.

A two-megaton warhead is designed to trigger a tsunami and create a 300-foot wall of radioactive water to devastate coastal cities.

The sub also features Bond villain-style secret compartments to launch mini-subs and drones for covert sabotage and espionage operations – like cutting underwater cables.

Christopher A. Ford, a former assistant secretary of state for international security and non-proliferation, told CNN the torpedo was designed to “deluge US coastal cities with radioactive tsunamis.”

NATO already issued a chilling nuclear war warning after Putin’s disturbed speech last week.

Jens Stoltenberg, head of the Western military alliance, said Putin’s move to make four regions of Ukraine part of Russia has brought the world one step closer to nuclear Armageddon.

Mr. Putin is not being controlled… just as he made the irresponsible decision to invade Ukraine, you know, he might make a different decision

Lloyd AustinUS Secretary of Defense

“Putin has mobilized hundreds of thousands more troops, engaged in irresponsible nuclear saber-rattling and is now illegally annexing more Ukrainian territory,” he said.

“Taken together, this represents the worst escalation since the beginning of the war.

“NATO reiterates its unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We remain committed to supporting Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression for as long as necessary.”

Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin warned that Putin’s nuclear threats could not be a bluff.

He told CNN: “Mr. Putin is not controlled. Just as he made the irresponsible decision to invade Ukraine, he could make a different decision.”

Austin said what will happen next in the Ukraine war is “difficult to predict”.

But former CIA director and retired four-star Army General David Petraeus said the US and its allies would destroy Russia’s troops if Putin uses nuclear weapons in the country.

He told ABC News: “It can always get worse for Putin and for Russia… They have to take the threat seriously.

“Just to give you a hypothesis, we would respond by leading a NATO — a collective — effort that would include every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine, and also in Crimea, and every would knock out the ship in the Black Sea.”

And although Ukraine is not a member of NATO, a “US and NATO response” would be appropriate if Russia uses nuclear weapons, Petraeus said.

Petraeus acknowledged that the likelihood of radiation reaching NATO countries could be interpreted as an attack on a NATO member.

“Perhaps you can bring this case up. The other case is that this is so awful that there has to be an answer — it can’t go unanswered,” he said.

But he added: “You don’t want to get into a nuclear escalation again here. But you have to show that this is by no means acceptable.” NATO warning as Putin ‘deploys world’s largest submarine’ capable of being armed with terrifying nuclear ‘apocalypse drone’
