Ferguson, 38, was drafted as a late substitute to compete against his fellow American after Khamzat Chimaev missed the weight by seven and a half pounds.

But he failed to inflict a defeat on Diaz in the main event at UFC 279 as he suffered his fifth straight loss in the octagon.

Diaz received $50,000 [£43k] Achievement bonus after beating Ferguson when he stole the show in Sin City.

He left the 38-year-old in a bloody mess with brutal punches before a takedown in the fourth round, where he scored a submission.

Ferguson’s shin also bled profusely after being at the end of an early leg kick in the first round.

Following his win, which marked the end of a 15-year career with Dana White’s company, Diaz said, “All I know is that it was a love-hate relationship between me and the UFC.

“I made it today. I love the UFC [UFC President] Dana White. I feel like I’ve had the longest and most successful career in the UFC.

“I want to get out of the UFC a little bit and show all these UFC fighters how to take on and own another sport, how to do it.

“Because Conor McGregor didn’t know how to do it and none of these other fighters know how to do it.

“So I’m going to go out there and take another job and be the best at it. Show everyone that I’m the best at it.

“Boxing, kickboxing, ju-jitsu, other MMA organizations… If you think you’re the top, crème de la crème right here baby.” I come for you.”

Elsewhere on the map, Chimaev defeated Kevin Holland in their catchweight bout by submission in the first round.

Meanwhile, Daniel Rodriguez beat Li Jingliang by split decision.
