Eric, 36, was a five-time world racing champion, while his British wife Sophie, 26, also claimed the women’s world title in 2016.

Eric was racing in Saint-Louis, Guadeloupe on the day of his tragic death and the water conditions were rated as “moderate”.

His wife and child attended the event to support him.

A search party was sent to look for Eric after he failed to register for the final phase of the event, The Watercraft Journal reported.

He was found unresponsive next to his undamaged jet ski.

“All of us at Watercraft Journal are saddened to learn of the death of world racing champion Eric ‘The Eagle’ Francis while competing in Guadalupe this weekend,” the publication wrote in a statement.

“Eric was one of the toughest racers today, a loving husband to Sophie and a devoted father, and a good friend to so, so many in our sport. Thank god Eric.”

Eric earned his nickname The Eagle after becoming a four-time World Champion in the world’s largest watercraft championship, P1 AquaX.

He had raced in Guadeloupe several times during his career.

Based on a recent social media post, Eric and Sophie married in 2016 before having Willow, now two, and another on the way.

“Married for 5 years and a lifetime to go,” Sophie tragically wrote late last year.

A GoFundMe has been started to help Eric’s family financially as Sophie is expecting her second child within weeks.

“We want to support her, let her know we love her and let her know she’s not alone,” the GoFundMe organizer wrote.

The campaign has already raised over $15,000 for the grieving family.

“On the water, Francis was wild, determined to prove his mettle,” the Journal wrote.

“Out of the water, Francis was approachable, kind and welcoming – slipping effortlessly into the role of a loving husband and father in recent years.”

P1 AquaX also started a GoFundMe which raised over $10,000 for the family.

“Although money won’t change anything, taking care of mom and the babies will help as they cope with the tragedy and loss of Eric,” the organizer wrote.

The details of Eric’s death are not known at this time.
