The man noticed his neighbor’s garage was open and went inside, Mt. Healthy Police Chief Vince Demasi told Ohio’s ABC affiliate WLWT.

“He saw a box he was looking at and saw the human remains, got concerned, took the box and called the police,” Demasi said.

After the surprising discovery, the police uncovered where the bones probably came from.

They are believed to be relics of a group called the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which appears to have had a large following and resided in Mt. Healthy, Ohio.

During the investigation, police reportedly learned that Ohio prisons were selling uncollected bodies over a century ago.

Demasi said it appears the bones were owned by the Odd Fellows, who used skeletons in initiation rituals.

The box ended up in the garage after a family who ran a grocery store bought the group’s cabin and found the bones.

The family dubbed the remains “Frieda” and placed them in the garage where they likely sat for decades, WLWT reported.

“I have to tell you, it’s one of the more bizarre cases we’ve ever stumbled upon in my 40+ year history,” Demasi told the news outlet.

“I don’t know exactly what to make of it, but I tend to believe it.”

The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office now has the bones.

Although investigators are examining the remains, it’s unclear if they can identify who they belonged to.

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded by Thomas Widely on April 26, 1819 by his own account Website.

Originally based in Baltimore, Maryland, the fraternity expanded to other states to “visit the sick, palliate the distressed, bury the dead, and raise the orphans.”
