A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER was found dead in his prison cell after being accused of multiple rapes of his 14-year-old student.
Brandon Holbrook, 30, of St. Louis, Missouri, was found sitting in an upright position on Monday.
Just half an hour earlier, around 3:15 p.m., prison officials checked on Holbrook and said he was fine.
When staff found him unconscious with headphones on, they attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.
Officers gave Holbrook CPR and administered Narcan, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
County Executive Sam Page spokesman Doug Moore said Narcan is typically given to unresponsive inmates because “drug use is widespread among those who come into our care.”
Holbrook died shortly after being rushed to Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
There were no signs of trauma to his body and staff are unsure if he died of a drug overdose.
However, an autopsy will be performed and his death is still under investigation.
Holbrook was sent to the St. Louis County Jail after being charged with three times raping his former student.
Two other accusers have stepped forward since he was charged, police said.
The former middle school teacher allegedly nursed the girl online after finding her on social media.
He then went to her home three times and raped her each time.
“Holbrook had met with a mental health worker earlier that day and was fine,” Moore said.
In his cell there was “nothing to indicate that he was injured at all”.
Moore added, “We just don’t know what happened.”
Holbrook’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, said he “knows perfectly well” his client was not suicidal and called his death “very unusual.”
“We spoke to him and he was very logical and he was persuasive, coherent and involved in his defense,” Rosenblum said.
“Under the circumstances, he was upbeat and upbeat. He still enjoyed very close family ties.”
Moore said prison officials are checking Holbrook’s tablet to see if he made any calls or emails before his death, which could help them understand what happened.
According to Moore, each inmate is given a tablet to talk to family and caseworkers.
Holbrook was in a quarantine cell when he was spotted awaiting a second negative COVID test result before re-entering the general prison population.
He was due for his preliminary hearing in two weeks after being charged with three counts of second-degree statutory rape and six counts of second-degree statutory sodomy.
