Neighbors reported a foul smell as crews began demolishing the burned lot at Highridge Mobile Home Park, WHNT reports.

One reportedly believed the smell was from an animal, as they had apparently previously sighted cats in the yard.

But coroners discovered a body believed to be the owner of the Daniel Diaz home.

The body was found as crews were clearing the remains of a wrecked trailer, WRBL reported.

It was sent to a state crime lab in Montgomery for further testing, coroner Arthur Sumbry revealed.

Neighbors said they last saw Diaz on May 9 — the day of the fire.

Several fire crews rushed to the scene as the area suffered from a shortage of hydrants and water.

Phenix City Fire Chief Kristin Kennedy said: “The water board of the real jurisdiction, they have no obligation to provide fire protection, water for fire protection.

“That’s why you don’t see many hydrants out there in these areas.”
