A woman took to Reddit to complain after her “attention-seeking” mother-in-law got a large tattoo in honor of her first grandchild.
In a post on the popular website Am I an asshole? on the forum, she explained that her mother-in-law revealed the ink stain while spending Christmas Eve with her, her son and their daughter, who was born last June.
“Everything was fine until we were almost done opening the presents,” she explains.
“She told me and my husband she had one last gift for our daughter and gave us an envelope.”
The card inside said she loved her granddaughter so much that she “decided to buy something for her and for herself”.
“We both looked up and there she was pulling down her collar to show us a huge tattoo on her chest a heart-shaped pearl necklace (my daughter’s birthstone), a some roses (birth flowers) and our daughter’s name,” she continued.
When she saw the tattoo, the woman was “stunned” and “can feel the tears welling up inside her”.
“I turned to my husband and basically made an excuse to ‘feed her’ with my daughter,” she wrote.
“I roll my eyes in my bedroom. I can hear my husband trying to explain to her what she did wrong.
“I want to tattoo my daughter/other kids (we plan to have more) but I can’t do it right now because I’m breastfeeding.”
She was even more upset when the tattoo included her daughter’s birthstone and flower, as well as her name.
I was annoyed that she didn’t even think to discuss with us, her parents, how we would feel about it. “
After arguing with each other, she came out and saw her mother-in-law sobbing and “making a scene”, begging them not to “throw her out”.
“She told me she was sorry, she didn’t think it was a big deal and she thought she was doing something nice for my daughter,” the woman continued.
“I told her my daughter is 6 months old and doesn’t know what a tattoo is and she does this for attention like anything else.
“I’m very upset that she didn’t even think to discuss with us, her parents, how we would feel about it.”
She also told her mother-in-law that she had “pampered” her and her husband as the parents of their daughter.
“Since then, she’s been texting my husband and I almost every day (I don’t reply) about her birthday plans coming up,” she wrote.
“The fact that she’s just trying to sweep this whole thing under the rug and walk like nothing happened makes me even angrier. I never wanted to see my MIL tattoo. I Are you an asshole?”
The majority of comments on the post sided with the mother-in-law, some going as far as to say that the original poster (OP) was looking for attention for himself.
One wrote: “What touched me was that she called MIL looking for attention because her daughter doesn’t even know what a tattoo is, but the only reason she doesn’t have a tattoo is because She’s breastfeeding.”
“So OP will do it to get attention? OP is acting like she designed a tattoo and MIL stole it.”
“This is ridiculous. I hope it’s just ‘hormones’, even if I really hate this kind of argument,” another commented, adding that “you’re an asshole”.
“OP is a drama queen, MIL is trying to do something sweet with her first grandchild, she is too excited while OP is turning her down every step of the way,” another said. more.
“Imagine how devastated MIL would feel every time she shuts down for trying to have a good relationship with the OP.”
Speaking of tattoos, this woman has an ink that is a QR code that plays the Shrek theme song.
