A MOTHER has shared the horrific moment she saw her baby daughter mutilated by the family’s four puppies.
Little Felicity, two, had her ear chewed off, her eye gouged out and her face covered with hundreds of deep scratches.
Mother Michele Peden, 30, said she blames herself for the horror at the family home in California.
She and her husband Michael adopted the Queensland Labrador puppies – named Amarah, Negan, Gideon and Keerah – last month after moving into a new house with a large yard.
On June 3, she stopped by to shop, leaving Michael to look after their four children, Samantha, 13, Daisy, 11, Felicity, two, and Daryl, one.
Minutes later, she received a call that Michael was taking Felicity to the hospital as she was covered in blood and looked like she had lost an eye.
Nobody saw the abuse that happened when the father worked in the yard and the older sisters were inside with the baby.
Michele followed them to the hospital and was horrified to see Felicity unconscious with deep wounds and bloody scratches all over her face.
She said: “They had eaten her ear and mutilated her face, neck and torso.
“All I could smell was puppy drool all over her head, which made me cry and get sick to my stomach.
“She was missing her hair and was covered in bandages and gauze.
“There were stitches in multiple places including her lip, neck and throat.
“I cried, my heart was broken and I felt like I was going to pass out – the feeling of not being able to do anything to help my baby was overwhelming.
“I blamed myself and the guilt for not seeing the signs was overwhelming.
“At the time I didn’t have any other information, but I concluded that the only thing that could have caused that kind of damage in the backyard was the puppies.”
Felicity was then flown to a specialty hospital in Fresno.
Her mother added: “After three hours of plastic surgery they couldn’t save much of her ear – except her earlobe and inner ear.
“Medics informed us that she had muscle damage in her face, arms and legs, where she will need many surgeries in the near future.
“I wanted to hold her but we couldn’t as we were told her neck injuries were too serious.
“Before the incident, she was full of joy, smiles and mischief, but initially we worried that her future would be different.”
The nightmare continued as doctors said her kidneys were failing and her body was gradually shutting down due to the trauma.
Thankfully, she pulled through and is now said to be recovering well, although she has many more surgeries ahead of her in the years to come.
When she’s seven years old, doctors will remove a rib to construct a new ear.
Felicity’s grandma started a GoFundMe appeal to help pay her mounting hospital bills.
The family shared news of their ordeal to raise awareness among dog owners.
Her four 12-week-old puppies were sent to an animal shelter for housing.
It is hoped they will not pose a future threat if separated, but face being crushed if they cannot be trained.
Michele said: “In the three weeks that we had the puppies they showed no signs of becoming aggressive.
“I would never have left Felicity alone with them [if they had].
“We take full responsibility and accountability for this tragedy – but are incredibly grateful to everyone who has extended their love and prayers of support.
“She is doing great now and will be in therapy to learn how to deal with it.
“Our Felicity is a strong, resilient angel who will overcome whatever she has endured and we hope that over time the trauma will be forgotten as she heals.”
