My Hero Academia is one of the most successful manga series of all time. With more than 50 million copies sold worldwide and five years on the top ten list of Japanese manga, not to mention video games, movie, and an extremely popular anime, My Hero Academia will become one of the classic comic series of all time.

And it’s all coming to an end. That’s according to creator Kohei Horikoshi, who give notice via statement was revealed at the Jump Festa event held last weekend just outside Tokyo.

“If everything goes well, the original My Hero Academia [manga] such as will achieve the goal in only about a year,” reads Horikoshi’s statement (with translation by Kotaku). Horikoshi added that he has been planning to write and draw the final installment with the aim of completing the series, although he is still unsure if it will live up to everyone’s expectations.

He’s also not sure if he’ll get it done by 2022. Horikoshi’s next statement right after the first makes it seem like next year is more of a tentative deadline than a certain date.

“If things don’t go well, I think at next year’s Jump Festa, I will [Deku voice actor] Mr. Yamashita read the same statement. ”

Even nearly seven years later, My Hero Academia is still incredibly popular. Over 7 million manga sold in Japan this year alone, although it pales in comparison to both Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, both of which sold close to 30 million copies. Perhaps now is the right time for My Hero Academia to bow gracefully to clear the way for the next generation of manga.

In loosely related anime news, Netflix canceled live-action Cowboy Bebop for reasons known only to the streaming platform, but fans trying to save the show with a petition. One of the most popular is near 50,000 signatures, seems like a lot, but will it be enough to convince Netflix to give Cowboy Bebop another chance?
