“Murderer,” who escaped with guard, “planned hostage breakout in 2020” and is very violent, says victim’s son

An accused killer who is on the run after escaping prison with the help of a warden previously plotted another escape in 2020 and is “incredibly dangerous,” says the son of his alleged victim.

Murder suspect Casey White, 38, and Correctional Officer Vicki White, 56, are both wanted by police after they disappeared from the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Alabama on Friday.

Casey White, 38, was serving a 75-year sentence when he escaped on Friday. He also confessed to a 2015 cold case murder and should be brought to justice

The couple, who are not related, left prison at 9.14am, with Vicki telling her colleagues she would be escorting White to a nearby courthouse for a mental examination, although no such appointment was scheduled.

An arrest warrant was issued Monday afternoon for Vicki White, who was charged with allowing or facilitating the first-degree escape, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said.

Singleton told reporters that while it’s clear that Vicki was “involved” in Casey White’s escape, it’s unclear whether or not she did so voluntarily.

This isn’t the first time Casey White has tried to escape from custody.

He attempted to break out of the same prison in October 2020, shortly after confessing to the murder of Connie Ridgeway, a 58-year-old mother of two who was stabbed to death in a 2015 home invasion.

After asking if he could stay in jail rather than be transferred back to jail, White reportedly crafted two makeshift knives — or “shives” — in a shower and planned to take a hostage to help him escape to help the facility.

However, the plan was thwarted by correctional officers. The prison then established a policy requiring that two sworn deputies accompany him at all times, including during transport to the courthouse.

White is still on trial for Ridgeway’s murder. Despite his earlier confession, he later pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Ridgeway’s son, Austin Williams, told The US Sun he was “shocked” and concerned to learn of Casey White’s escape when he was contacted by authorities late last week.

“It’s really hard to describe how I feel,” Austin said. “I really didn’t know how to react when they told me I was so shocked.

“It’s hard to believe that something like this is even possible. It totally blows my mind.”

Citing Casey White’s “violent history,” Austin, who lives in Tennessee, said he feared for his own safety and the safety of the public while the alleged killer remains at large.

“Oh, he’s a very dangerous person and anyone who comes into contact with her needs to call 911 right away,” Austin said.

“He’s so dangerous. This is a 1.9 meter tall, 250 pound man who broke into a woman’s home and stabbed her to death,” he claimed.

“This is a very dangerous guy and that means anyone who crosses his path is in grave danger.

“I doubtless fear for their safety,” he added. “He’s a very violent person and there’s no limit to what he could do.”

Victim’s Plea

Seeing Casey White’s name all over the news and social media has reopened a number of old wounds for Austin and his family, he said.

The 42-year-old has expressed his hope that Casey White will be quickly arrested and put back behind bars so he can finally stand trial for his mother’s murder.

“It’s all very shocking and frustrating,” he said. “You think you’ve got the guy and he finally gets brought to justice and then all of a sudden he comes out and someone who’s supposed to be keeping him inside actually helps him out.

“We want to see him back behind bars as soon as possible so we can find out the motive for killing my mother.

“She was such a kind, gentle soul. And I still don’t understand how anyone could do something like that to her.”

After his recapture, Austin suggested that Casey be housed in a maximum security facility under the highest possible surveillance until “he’s not here anymore”.

The surviving son also urged Vicki White to face charges, adding: “It blows my mind that anyone familiar with Casey White and his record would risk anything with him because he’s just such a dangerous person is.

Speaking directly to the couple, Austin asked, “Please just give yourself up before someone else gets hurt.

“Nobody else needs to get hurt. It’s not too late for you to turn yourself in and come back safely.”

MYSTERY SURROUNDS JAILBREAK

Law enforcement is still investigating the circumstances of Casey White’s escape while a manhunt for him and Vicki White continues.

In an appearance Monday on CNN, Singleton said authorities have found no evidence Vicki White was kidnapped or forced to help Casey White escape, although for now they are open as to what may have happened.

“She’s certainly an accomplice,” the sheriff said. “It is clear from the evidence we have gathered that this was not the case – that he did not abduct or force them or that far into the car after they left the facility.”

Casey White, who was serving a 75-year sentence for kidnapping and attempted murder after his disappearance, should be considered armed and dangerous, police say.

Vicki White may also be armed after disappearing with a 9mm handgun, investigators say.

Vicky White said she would take Casey White for a mental health assessment when she released him from jail on Friday morning.

She also told her colleagues that she would seek medical attention after dropping off the inmate because she was feeling under the weather.

The US Marshals Office confirms that White was handcuffed and chained when he and Vicki left the prison Friday morning, but she broke protocol by leaving the facility alone with White.

Police later found that the couple had never arrived at the courthouse, and that Casey White was not even scheduled to have such an inquest.

“EXEMPLARY EMPLOYEE”

Later that afternoon, prison officials tried to reach White by phone, but voicemail rang straight away. Authorities then learned that Casey White had not returned to prison around 3:30 p.m.

Vicki White’s squad car was found abandoned in the parking lot of a local mall shortly after.

On Monday, Sheriff Singleton, who previously described Vicki as a “model employee” for 16 years, said she was “involved” in the escape, but they’re not sure if she did it willingly or was forced.

Singleton said Vicki has spoken of retiring for three or four months and even sold her house about a month ago and talked about moving to the beach.

The sheriff said Vicki filed her pension papers with the department last week after two decades.

“Everyone thought she was going to retire. Nobody saw this coming,” the sheriff said Monday.

Singleton said Vicki was definitely in danger, intentionally or not.

“This guy is not someone to mess with. He is 6ft 9 tall and weighs about 250 pounds. … We assume he’s armed because she was armed,” he said.

FORBIDDEN LOVE?

Authorities are also investigating whether or not Vicki White and Casey White had a romantic relationship.

As deputy director of the county correctional facilities, Vicki was “frequently in the cell blocks and has contact with all the inmates at one time or another,” Singleton told CNN.

“But as far as a romantic relationship or anything like that, we don’t have any evidence or proof of that, although it’s a possibility.”

The US Marshals Service has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the inmate’s arrest and locating the “missing and vulnerable” corrections officer.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are also involved in the investigation.

Anyone with information regarding White’s whereabouts or Assistant Director of Corrections White’s disappearance is urged to contact law enforcement, according to a U.S. Marshals Service news release.

“You should not attempt to approach any of these individuals because we consider both to be dangerous and in all likelihood both individuals are armed,” US Marshal Marty Keely said in separate comments.
