Murdered woman’s husband, 86, was quizzed by police to find his wife’s killer while he was still in critical condition

MURDER police are hoping that the husband of an OAP who was brutally murdered in her own home will recover enough to help point the finger at their violent attacker.

Elderly Freda Walker, 86, was found dead in her 50-year-old home while her husband Kenneth, 88, remained hospitalized in critical condition.

The pair were spotted in the quiet village of Langwith Junction, Derbyshire, following the horror attack on Saturday morning.

Officials have confirmed that the former mayor of Bolsover remains in hospital in critical condition.

But it is understood they will question him about the incident when he is able to answer questions, in the hope that he will be able to provide them with vital information about his wife’s killer.

Council leader Steve Fritchley said he was praying for his friend’s “full recovery”, after he celebrated his birthday two days before the horrific ordeal.

He explained how his friend, a retired mining safety inspector, battled cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy that led to the attack.

Mr Fritchley told The Sun: “This is terrible news and really shocked me. I just met him last month at an awards ceremony and he was joking.

“He has cancer, either throat or upper chest, and he is undergoing treatment.

“Ken is a fighter, he is a survivor. He has existed in local politics and union politics for a long time, and he is undergoing treatment for cancer.

“What happened was unimaginable. He was sick from illness but still had a fighting spirit.

“He will want to try to fend off any attackers, he will want to protect his wife.

“Freda is quite active and when I last saw her she was feeding me sausage rolls!

“Her life ending like that was unthinkable. What happened in today’s society? ”

Last month Kenneth, who sits on the Shirebrook Town Council, was awarded the honor for serving Bolsover County Council.

Police are aggressively hunting for their attacker, who they believe is a stranger to the couple, and have ruled out the assault as a domestic incident.

Derbyshire Police confirmed that they are looking at “all lines” of the investigation, and are understood to be probing others. Unresolved violent attacks in the region.

Mr Fritchley added: “I have known Ken and Freda for many years. Both are well known in the area and are likeable people.

“Ken has been involved with councils and charities and Freda has always been there to support him.”

“Separate people and the elderly will feel vulnerable. They say lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice, but you can’t be sure.”

Bolsover MP Mark Fletcher paid tribute to Kenneth and his wife, saying “his thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time”.

A heartfelt tribute to Freda wrote: “To the best friend anyone could ever have in life.

“I will miss you so much. I can’t believe this has happened to the most beautiful person in the world.”

Detectives are urging anyone living in the area to stay alert and prepare to call 999.

Officers from Derbyshire Police have warned that the shocking incident had a “severe level of violence” used.

General Manager Hayley Barnett said: “The couple is well known here. I know that many people who knew them were shocked by this horrible incident.

“I would like to urge anyone with any information regarding this incident to come forward as it is a matter of urgency.

“I have to confirm that no arrests have been made in this case and this is not a domestic case.

“There was also a serious level of violence used in the incident and we are doing all we can to understand the circumstances and find those responsible.

“If you are in the area between January 14 and 15, please contact police officers as we are specifically looking to find anyone who may have any dashcam footage and anyone in the area. area with CCTV.

“I urge everyone to exercise good security in their relationships with their homes.

“Lock their doors and windows and don’t let any strangers in. Do not display any valuables.

“And have a means of contacting emergency services if needed.”

Police remain at the scene and locals have been warned that there will be a police presence for some time.

Officers are appealing to anyone with information to provide “as a matter of urgency”.
