Regan Noelle Gibbs, a 25-year-old former University of Kansas Jayhawks soccer goaltender, died Monday night after her husband called 911 from their shared apartment, police said.

The Lawrence, Kansas officers who responded found them critically injured before first responders pronounced them dead.

Her husband, 26-year-old Chad Joseph Marek, was at the home at the time, the Lawrence Kansas Police Department said.

“God commanded him to kill his wife,” Police Chief Rich Lockhart told local media.

“There’s a lot more that I don’t have with me right now,” Lockhart added when asked if Marek even expanded on the statement.

The police arrested him on suspicion of murder.

Authorities do not yet know how Gibbs died. They said that due to the condition of her body, they could not immediately determine a cause of death.

An autopsy is scheduled for May 26 and domestic violence is being investigated as a possible factor that contributed to Gibbs’ death, police said.

Kristin Gibbs, Regan’s mother, held a press conference on Friday to share how she wanted her daughter to be remembered.

Along with Regan’s four younger siblings, she described Regan as a beautiful, kind-hearted woman who loved Jesus and people.

“She had faith in people,” Kristin Gibbs said.

“Love for people and they familiar people.”

Her sister Ashlyn said that Regan was always compassionate towards others. She planned to go back to school to become a medical assistant and do missionary work.

“If you had the opportunity to meet Regan, you would quickly realize how much she loved Jesus,” Madelyn Gibbs said.

“That love spread to everyone around her.”

Regan’s mother said in the press conference that Regan was not legally married to Marek, although local Fox affiliate WDAF-TV reported that the couple married last fall, citing court records.

Regan’s mother, along with other relatives, shared harrowing claims that Marek manipulated Regan through her beliefs and isolated her from the family.

“Her phone suddenly stopped working,” Kristin Gibbs claimed.

“Conversations were limited to his phone but on speakers. No video allowed.”

Marek has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held on a $1 million bond, KCTV reported. He appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday and is expected back in court on May 24.

Kirsten Gibbs said she wants everyone who is in a similar situation to Regan to seek help.

“I’m sure many people who have involved a loved one in a similar situation can understand the frustration of seeing this, feeling helpless, but never expecting such a tragic ending,” said Kirsten Gibbs.

A GoFundMe was organized to help cover Regan Gibbs’ funeral expenses.
