Mumbai Indians Shah Rukh Khan, Manchester United owner to be part of new “Emirates T20 League”

Six strong contenders from franchise leagues worldwide, including IPL’s Mumbai Indians and Shah Rukh Khan’s horsemen riding franchise, which is set to embark on the upcoming Emirates T20 League in January next year, India’s period report on Friday.

The six-team tournament is the brainchild of former IPL executive Sundar Raman. It is currently run by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) with the backing of the head of the UAE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Social Development, Sheikh Al Nahyan.

Glazer family, owners of Manchester United Football clubs, who have recently failed to acquire either of the two new IPL brands, will also invest in the new league. This is seen as proof that they continue to be interested in a sport that is slowly but surely taking root in their backyard – the United States.

Financial services firm Capri Global has also expressed interest in bids for the IPL franchise. They will also sponsor a team in the Emirates T20 League. Delhi Capitals co-owner Kiran Kumar Gandhi will also invest in the league, albeit without Parth Jindal, the other 50% co-owner of the IPL franchise.

The Sydney Sixers, one of Australia’s most successful Big Bash League franchises, will become the final Emirates T20 League team, adding to their long-term investment drive in leagues outside of their home country.

Work on the tournament began in 2019. The Chennai Super Kings brand also showed initial interest but opted out afterwards.

Industry executives watching the developments, encouraged by the success of the IPL 2021 and T20 World Cup in the UAE, seem confident about the tournament’s prospects. They said TOI:

“January is a great time to play cricket in the UAE. The destination caters to multiple time zones, especially in the West. It fits very well into the Indian subcontinent’s prime time slot, as we’ve seen. in the last two IPLs and the recent T20 World Cup took place there.”

The Emirates T20 League’s reported business model will see franchisees invest year after year and reap profits through broadcast and sponsorship.
