SODA is a popular drink in America and around the world.

However, moxie soda is a beverage commonly found and consumed on the East Coast — particularly in the states of New England.

What is moxie soda?

Moxie soda is a fizzy drink created by Augustin Thompson in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1876.

The brand was among the first mass-produced soft drinks in the United States.

Due to its high popularity in the New England region, Moxie was named Maine’s official soft drink on May 10, 2005.

More than ten years later, the company was bought by The Coca-Cola Company in 2018.

How does moxie soda taste?

Moxie Soda is comparable to a bitter-tasting root beer.

Original ingredients included gentian root extract, an extremely bitter compound commonly used in herbal medicine.

According to Aimee Tucker of New England Today, “If you’re ‘on the go’ you might not like the taste, but for many New Englanders, a long, cold sip of Moxie is a crisp, fizzy reminder of home.”

“I think moxie soda tastes like a subtle, not-too-sweet mix of wintergreen and liquorice, but others…well…throw words like medicine, motor oil, and ‘root beer that’s really gone mad’ around.”

The comments left on Tucker’s articles underscore the great mark the brand has left on its consumers over the years.

One user wrote: “I’ve been a moxie drinker for 69 years.

“We sold it at my aunt and uncle’s little shop in Bowmanstown, Pennsylvania.”

They continued, “… Moxie was such a great part of our lives!

However, another commented on the change in tastes since Coca-Cola took over the brand: “I’ve loved Moxie since I was a kid (I’m 66 now).

“Recently I noticed a difference in taste in the last year or so.”

They added: “In checking the ingredients, I see that there is no longer any gentian root as an ingredient in the cans or liter plastic bottles.”

Where can I buy moxie soda?

Though lemonade tasters seem to either love it or hate it, Moxie is still made in America — though it may be hard to find outside of the East Coast.

Back in 2020, Coca-Cola Beverages Northeast took to Facebook to reassure Moxie fans that their beloved beverage was not discontinued.

“Good morning! We’ve had several messages from concerned Moxie fans over the past few days, and we wanted to reassure everyone that we’re absolutely still making Moxie,” the company wrote at the time.

If you live outside the New England states and are difficult to visit, fans of Moxie can buy the drink online from retailers like Walmart and Amazon.
