The heartless couple were arrested on child molestation charges after emergency workers found the nine-year-old unresponsive “with a large amount of bugs on her face” at her home in Tuscon on March 22, according to court documents obtained by LawandCrime.com.

First responders told investigators that “on closer inspection, it was discovered that there was an enormous amount of lice in her hair.”

Authorities also found text messages proving the girl’s mother knew she was ill but did nothing about it.

During an interview with police, Sandra said her daughter, who has not been identified, suffered from anemia, vomiting, fever and headache and had trouble keeping her balance.

One of Sandra’s older children told police her mother tried to treat her younger sister’s hair lice with mouthwash.

Phone records show that the carefree mother texted her boyfriend on March 14 and 15, knowing her child needed medical attention.

On March 21, police said Sandra texted her boyfriend, saying: “Oh my god baby. Listen, I’m in my room and my mom called me. (redacted) asked if I could check on her to make sure she didn’t die.”

When her boyfriend told her to take the sick girl to the hospital, Sandra refused, police said.

The girl’s grandmother also knew how bad her condition was getting and threatened to call 911, but eventually decided against it and texted Sandra that the girl “can’t go to the ER with her hair, but that’s up to me because.” you’re not at home”.

According to an autopsy, the young girl died of anemia related to infection from lice infestation, and this malnutrition contributed to her death.

The Pima County coroner determined the nine-year-old’s cause of death to be neglect.

Sandra’s 11 and 13-year-old children have also been found to have lice and are now in the care of family members.

Police said that during an interview, Sandra admitted negligence, telling an officer that “if she had sought medical attention,[her daughter]would probably still be alive,” according to an affidavit.
