More than 100 people attend vigil for the 26-year-old man shot, killed on the porch of Palmer Square

CHICAGO – More than 100 people turned up on Thursday night to attend a vigil for a 26-year-old man who was fatally shot on the porch of his friend’s house last weekend.

At about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, police responded to North Albany’s 2100 block to reports of a shooting. Suraj Mahadeva, 26, was standing on the porch of his friend’s house when he was shot in the head.

Mahadeva, a medical doctor from Michigan, was taken to Mount Sinai – where he is presumed dead.

Mahadeva moved to the city after graduating from Michigan State University in 2018, where he majored in neuroscience with a minor in dance.

Mahadeva is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ and South Asian communities in Chicago.

Those who loved him were heartbroken over the seemingly random shooting that claimed his life.

Friend J. Saxon-Maldonado said: “Everybody had the same thing to say about him, he was gorgeous and wonderful, so bright and beautiful and their lives will be forever touched by his kindness. his presence in it”. “I hope that there will be answers, there will be justice, and there will be safety in the city for everyone. Let this not happen to anyone else.”

It is not clear whether Mahadeva was shot by someone while walking or in a passing vehicle. No one is in custody at this time.
