Money Saving Measures for Pain Relief – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — With the price at the pump, who can blame you for eyeing the cheaper fuel button?

So is there a cheaper substitute to save a little money and does it hurt?

Your vehicle can probably burn other fuels, but be careful.

Gasoline prices at each pump can range from $5/gallon to $3.50.

“The closer you stay to the recommended octane number, the better,” says automotive expert Jack Saunders.

He told me to get the cheapest petrol, the E85.

“Corn ethanol-based fuel, which is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, so you only need us if you drive a flex-fuel vehicle,” he explained.

If you try to burn it in a regular engine, it will burn faster and you’ll use more of it, and according to Saunders it could damage the engine in the long term.

The drop from premium to regular unleaded fuel hurts engine performance, but if you’re just trying to save a few bucks, “you probably won’t notice a problem if you switch tanks,” says Saunders.

So that means alternating, not completely alternating.

“No more than 50-50 mix, you know, the premium fill and then a regular fill and alternating like that,” Saunders said.

He said apart from the grade of gas, most modern cars have a fuel pump in the gas tank.

“There’s a greater chance that you’re letting the pump suck oxygen rather than gas, and that’s usually going to kill the pump,” he said. “It could certainly cause it to overheat and that can then cause damage to the fuel pump.”

The idea of running less than premium petrol in your car, according to Saunders, could work with a mid-range petrol for a couple of tanks, then back to premium – basically a 2-for-1 mix.

And while unleaded 88 is cheaper than regular unleaded gasoline, it’s because it contains more ethanol — 15 percent instead of 10 percent. While it’s cheaper, you only need to use a little bit more to get the same distance as regular lead-free.
