A mother tragically died in a house fire after saving the life of her 12-year-old son in the blaze.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours but family members were devastated after Brittany Jones, 35, was later discovered inside the home.
According to the Daily Sentinel, Brittany shared the Camden, New York home with her husband Aaron and their 12-year-old son Anthony.
Unfortunately, although the couple’s son managed to escape the inferno, his mother didn’t.
Family members told CNY Central they gathered outside the house when it caught fire on Monday, hoping to see Brittany appear.
“You cling to hope that she’s okay because no one wanted to think she wasn’t okay,” said Kayla Svereika, Brittany’s sister-in-law.
However, a first responder broke the news that Brittany was unable to escape the fire – instead spending her final moments making sure her son left the house.
“She was a force to be reckoned with in everything she did,” added Svereiki.
“She didn’t do anything by halves — she made it whole.”
A GoFundMe page set up by family members paid tribute to the mother, saying she will “never be replaced.”
Aaron’s siblings wrote: “My brother lost his wife. My nephew lost his mother. She saved her son’s life and made sure he got out of the house.
“Money is the last thing on their mind. But they have lost everything. All they have left is their clothes on their backs.”
In a statement, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and the Camden Police Department responded to the fire around 9:45 p.m. Monday night.
They said: “Deputies and the village police arrived about three minutes after hearing the call and the house was completely engulfed.
“When they arrived, they learned that one of the residents may still be in the house.
“Later, firefighters discovered a victim who is believed to be a resident of the home.”
Authorities said sheriff’s investigators, members of the sheriff’s ID unit and New York State arson investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire, which “does not appear to be suspicious.”
