This is the chilling moment one of Vladimir Putin’s nuclear bombers was caught in a major military escalation near the Ukrainian border.
Videos today showed four planes – one used to transport nuclear bombs – over the Kaluga region between Moscow and the Ukrainian border.
The Ministry of Defense in Moscow initially did not disclose the purpose of the operation.
Larger Tu-95s have been repeatedly used to strike targets in Ukraine with non-nuclear weapons, particularly Kh-55 and Kh-101 air-launched cruise missiles.
Recent attacks by Russia have focused on major cities such as Kyiv and Lviv.
Additional footage emerged showing a Tu-95 mission Saturday over the Smolensk region, also in western Russia.
The super-noisy Tu-95 is the only propeller-driven strategic bomber still in service today, and the aircraft first flew 70 years ago.
Putin has used the Tu-95 to sonic the UK at moments of high tension, such as in February this year when the Royal Air Force scrambled Typhoon fighters to escort two bears off northern Scotland.
