Mo Salah says he will not be ‘selfish’ at Liverpool contract talks and risk derailing title bid ahead of Man City showdown

MO SALAH says he cannot be ‘selfish’ about his new deal and risk derailing Liverpool’s quest for the quadruple.

The Reds forward, 29, has just 16 months left on his contract and revealed talks ahead of Sunday’s Premier League title showdown in Manchester City are “sensitive”.

But he said: “There are a lot of things that people don’t know about it.

“I can’t be selfish and talk about my situation because we are at the most important time for the team.

“So I just have to talk about the team, focus on what’s coming for the team – that’s the most important thing.

“That’s all I can say. Hopefully we’ll be more optimistic and see what will happen.”

Salah said in January that he was “not asking for crazy stuff” despite allegedly asking to be named the Reds’ highest-paid player at £350,000 a week.

Owners FSG have refused to budge, determined not to break their wage scale, which Virgil van Dijk currently sees as the top earner at £225,000 a week.

With Salah under contract until June 2023, is he confident he will sign a longer-term deal to stay?

He added: “I can’t say that. I’ve said what I want many times, but I can’t really go into the contract now because it’s a really delicate situation.

“The team has to win. I can’t go on the news now and talk about the contract, I’m just concentrating on the team. That’s it.”

Boss Jurgen Klopp claims he is happy with Salah despite substituting him twice in back-to-back games against Benfica and Watford following his World Cup defeat by Senegal last month.

And top scorer Salah, who has scored 28 goals but has failed to find the back of the net in seven open play games, is adamant the future call hasn’t affected his performances.

He said: “Not at all. I spoke to the manager from time to time. I’m very professional, I know my job very well.

“I’m almost the first and last to leave. I know what I am doing. I do not mind.

“I just focus on the team and that’s the most important thing for me, focus on winning trophies and I just give my all for the club.”
