When Giannis Antetokounmpo, NBA Finals MVP, recently named GQ Athlete of the Year, his interview with the magazine provided insight into his relationship with one of the league’s other superstars, James Harden. Mostly Antetokounmpo appreciates, and doesn’t hate, the talent of the Brooklyn Nets.
NS Milwaukee Bucks power forward, who has been named MVP twice and last season led Milwaukee to his first title since 1971, showed off a room where he hangs autographed jerseys from across the NBA. That collection includes a Harden jersey. Antetokounmpo told interviewer Zach Baron,
“A lot of people think I eat beef with James Harden, that’s not true”
Baron also participated,
He said, because if so, why is his jersey here?
NBA watchers wonder if Antetokounmpo and Harden have been in harmony. Harden, 2017-18 MVP, believes he should have been the 2018-2019 MVP, despite Antetokounmpo’s landslide victory. Following the announcement of the award, Harden went the extra mile to snap exquisite shots into Antetokounmpo, saying in an interview with ESPN,
“I wish I could be only 7 feet tall and run and jump. That requires no skill at all. I really had to learn how to play basketball. ”
That shot started the idea that beef could exist between the two, but Antetokounmpo may have ended that notion with his quote to GQ.
Despite what Antetokounmpo says, is Harden-Antetokounmpo beef still possible?
Antetokounmpo seems to be friendly, kind, and super humble, having overcome a poor upbringing as the son of immigrant parents in Greece. When he was off the field, his personality seemed infectious, as if no one could hate him.
On the other hand, when Antetokounmpo is on the field, that easygoing demeanor seems to change. He becomes a dominating, passionate player who is not afraid of anything and will take down enemies at both belts.
Harden beef vs. Antetokounmpo, even if Antetokounmpo seems to have denied it, could still exist due to their team’s circumstances. The Bucks are the defending NBA champions, and Harden and brooklyn network looking to win the NBA title.
What could also boost their rivalry is that Harden played through an injury last season to help the Nets beat the Bucks in the knockout stages. The Nets lost in the amazing Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals to the Bucks.
Also don’t forget, Antetokounmpo threw a passing bullet right at Harden’s head, which is accidental but still happens.
