MILITANT Rail strikers should “get back to work” as new laws come to curb their strikes, Liz Truss warned last night.
In a show of strength against union leaders bent on bringing Britain to a standstill with even more crippling industrial action, she insisted she would not bow to the pressure.
Tough new laws to ensure the country’s railroads can continue to run at minimum levels are on the way “as soon as possible,” she promised.
And Britain will not thrive if people are not allowed to go to work and get ahead.
She fired a warning shot at union leaders, saying: “I want to be constructive with the unions – but I would tell them to get back to work.”
After it was revealed that the Tory conference in Birmingham was being hit by major strikes, she said: “There is no doubt that we are facing difficult times as a country.
“I want this country to be prosperous – that means people can work, can do their business, can move forward with projects.”
But she promised workers’ rights would be safe at her watch – and no one would see her holiday torn up on the premise of cutting post-Brexit rules.
She stressed: “We are talking about the right regulations for the UK. And this is not about abolishing employee rights and vacation days.
“But there are a number of EU rules that don’t work for the UK that we need to do differently.
“In 2016, people voted to leave the EU. Now it’s 2022.
“What I promised is that by the end of 2023 all these EU rules will be off the statute books and we will have our own rules.”
