Mike Tyson warns Conor McGregor against ‘a few fights to get your feet wet’ and not joining the UFC’s big boys in MMA return

BOX legend Mike Tyson has urged Conor McGregor to dodge the big boys in the lightweight division if he returns to the UFC.

McGregor, 33, is approaching a blockbuster return to the cage just over a year after breaking his leg and has flirted with fights with the elite of the 155-pound division.

However, former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson doesn’t want The Notorious – who is on a one-on-one sled – to jump back down for his comeback fight.

At a performance on The Battle Cards Podcast, Iron Mike said: “After a loss you should have a few fights to get your feet wet.

“Conor, I think you should build your confidence and do what you do: win excitingly.”

Three-time Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler is on McGregor’s hit list after brutally beating Tony Ferguson last month.

But Tyson isn’t a fan of the fight for McGregor’s return, saying: “Well that’s a tough fight.

“He’s a warrior, no matter if he loses, he makes exciting fights. It’s hard to beat this guy.

“Not a big time guy, let him get three fights and build his confidence back up. With each fight, the opponent goes to a higher level.”

McGregor hasn’t tasted a win since his 40-second demolition of a battle-hardened Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January 2020.

And Tyson believes the Irishman would benefit from facing a similarly less dangerous opponent later this year.

He said: “Even if he wins, he will be injured in the next fight and will not be able to fight in the next fight.

“You’re getting your experience down, three more fights, you’re feeling good, then beat the last two guys really qualified opponents, now you go out again.”

McGregor – who is in the final stages of recovery from the broken leg he sustained in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier last July – had his eye on a summer return to the octagon.

But UFC supremo Dana White doesn’t expect the Dubliner to be back in action until the autumn at the earliest.

He recently told SunSport, “We’re looking to early fall when all goes well.”

White added: “If his leg heals properly and he gets clearance to really start training then maybe early fall.”
