Michael van Gerwen snags a £305,000 jackpot for first big win in 18 months in Premier League final thriller against Joe Cullen

The 33-year-old Dutchman was heartbroken after a match dart against Joe Cullen in the Berlin playoffs, embarking on Phil Taylor’s 10-year track record.

Mighty Mike bagged the winner’s check worth £275,000 – on top of his £30,000 league format winnings bonus – and also ended an 18-month dry spell in big titles.

He will now undergo surgery to cure carpal tunnel syndrome in his throwing arm, which will see him miss darts for seven weeks.

Van Gerwen said: “It’s emotional, I had to play well. I underperformed in Copenhagen last week and didn’t do my best.

“My focus was on this tournament. Jonny was the favorite but then Joe Cullen beat him and played phenomenally. I knew I had to fight.

“It was’nt easy. I could have made it easier. What a day.

“Of course the drought hurt me. I know what I’m capable of.

“I strive for more. That was on my bucket list. Doing that in Berlin is great.

“We usually play the final at the O2 in London, but the crowd here was absolutely sensational. The sport is going in the right direction.

“Personally, I went through a difficult time. Winning this title means a lot to me. I’m a lucky man.”

Cullen, who was making his debut season in the Prem, broke down in tears as he watched the title slip away in front of 11,000 Germans.

The Yorkshireman said: “This is definitely tough, I’m disappointed, absolutely disappointed.

“It sounds trivial, but everything was on that second leg, missing three darts at 32, that cost me.

“This is a fine margin game. Michael is an amazing player and an amazing champion.

“I am absolutely devastated. I’d like to say that there is a nice consolation, but there isn’t.

“I’m absolutely devastated, I can’t believe I lost this. Michael is a fantastic champion.”
