The move is an attempt to improve diversity within the ranks.

It wants applications for the £33,000 secret service agent posts at its London headquarters.

Security chiefs are looking for surveillance officers to track down suspects and protect the country “from national security threats.”

An advert revealed: “We are MI5, our mission is to protect Britain.

“MI5 protects our national security from threats such as terrorism and espionage.

“Our activities are very diverse, which is why it is more necessary than ever to increase the diversity of our employees.

“To protect the UK we need people with different perspectives and backgrounds.

“We don’t recruit one ‘type’ of person.

“We are restricting registrations of interest to women and people from minority ethnic backgrounds only, as they are currently underrepresented in our workforce.”

The ad concludes: “You must work with Police, MI6, GCHQ, Whitehall, the Foreign Liaison and a host of internal specialists to thwart threats.

“In short, you will have a real impact on how we protect the country.”
