Mexican music icon Vicente Fernández has died aged 81



Vicente Fernández has died at the age of 81, according to his social media posts.

The posts said that the award-winning musician had passed away on Sunday morning. His cause of death has not been released.

In a Facebook post translated from Spanish, his media team wrote:

Rest in peace. Mr. Vicente Fernandez.

We regret to inform you of his passing on Sunday, December 12 at 6:15 a.m.
It is an honor and pride to share with everyone a wonderful musical career and give it all to my audience. Thank you for continuing to clap, thank you for continuing to sing.

In August, Fernández was hospitalized with a fall. The singer of hits like “Volver, volver” and “Por tu maldito amor,” fell at his ranch in Los Tres Potrillos, a suburb of Guadalajara. According to reports, the fall caused a spinal cord injury.

Fernandez has had many health problems in recent years. He was hospitalized for a kidney infection recently, and in 2012 he underwent a complicated surgery to remove nearly half of his liver because of a tumor. A year later, he faced a pulmonary thrombosis, and in March 2015, the male singer had to have surgery to remove 3 hernia plates.

Fernandez has sold more than 65 million albums and filmed more than 35 films. He has won three Grammy Awards and eight Latin Grammy Awards, in addition to being named Person of the Year by the Latin Recording Academy in 2002.
