Thomas ‘Mensi’ Mensforth, best known for being part of the punk rock band Angelic Upstarts, died later a battle with covid.

The singer, 65, experienced complications from the illness and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where he died on Friday, December 10.

Tributes were paid to the ‘punk rock legend’ who first joined the band in 1977.

His death was announced via Instagram where a black and white photo of the star doing what he does best is posted with the band’s name labeled at the top.

Along with the photo was the text: “Today we lost a punk rock legend.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all the people he has inspired. “

Fans have commented to express their feelings about the loss.

One person wrote: “Rest in peace Mensi thank you for the great lyrics and music”.

A second follower commented: “An angel got his wings…but too soon”, a third added: “So sorry for your loss.”

A fourth said: “Eternal legend RIP Mensi,” while another wrote: “Absolutely shocked. RIP.”

Music website Louder Than War posted their own tribute to the singer saying: “We are sorry to hear of the passing of the legendary singer from Angelic Upstarts, Mensi.

“He finally succumbed to Covid that he had been fighting in the hospital for the past few weeks. The charismatic singer had his heart on his sleeve and his band dotted. second wave with a series of classic singles.”

They say he has a ‘true heart’ which makes him a great stage as well as an ‘off-stage diamond’.

Mensi has been admitted to the ICU where his family say he is ‘very poor’ but they are ‘praying’ for positive news.

On Tuesday, his family posted an update to fans about his situation.

They hope the next time they post will be positive updates for the fans, but the next time they post it, it is to announce his sad death.

The update read: “Just an update for everyone. Dad is in ICU and still very poor, all family are hoping and praying for positive news everyday.

“He has a long way to go to recover and is in the best place possible to help him. He can’t use his phone or look at Facebook.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best. He’s a fighter and fighting every day and this will never change. Hopefully when we post our next post, I will. There will be some better and positive news to share.

They added: “He also has 100 messages, too many to reply when something comes up I’ll post it

Mensi’s family paid tribute to him on social media



Angelic Upstarts is a South Shields punk rock band formed in 1977, with Mensi as one of the original members.

The band carries an anti-fascist and working-class philosophy.

In their first ten years, they released a total of eight studio albums, and after a brief split, they reformed in 1988.

To the point that Mensi was the only original member of the band but he announced his departure in August 2006 but returned the following year.

On February 22, 2021, former Tony Morrison member known as Tony Feedback also passed away due to Coronavirus complications.
