Experts believe that MEGHAN Markle may be barred from running for US President due to her royal title.
A little-known constitutional amendment made two centuries ago could thwart any bid Meg makes to eventually get into the White House.
While the duchess has never publicly spoken of her desire to run for office, her own biographers also believe she is “possibly… even likely”, with one claiming she is. is “the embodiment of the American dream”.
Meanwhile, she was recently broke out for Republican senators to call coldly when she campaigned for paid parental leave.
Politicians say she introduced herself as the Duchess of Sussex – and don’t know how she got their numbers.
The move has caused outrage as the royals have always stayed away from political issues. A row of loud calls, with Palace aides warn the duchess is “using her title out of context” and Piers Morgan urged Queen relinquishes Meghan’s royal title.
And now, her title could deter her from seeking a career in high office, thanks to a little-known rule proposed to prevent Napoleon’s grandson from seeking power.
Constitution experts tell walkie talkie that in 1810 an important amendment to the constitution was proposed and passed in Congress.
A ROYAL ROAD
It stated that anyone “accepting, claiming, receiving or holding a title of nobility conferred by a foreign power” would be barred from holding federal office.
The amendment was sent to the legislatures of each state. There wasn’t enough green light for it – and the amendment was never approved.
But it was also never thrown away, and remained on the table for more than two centuries.
The decision was discussed after Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger brother Jérôme married American socialist Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Patterson.
It led to hot speculation that their son Jerome might run for office – and America would be annexed to the French empire.
Experts told the paper that, if the amendment is restored, 12 votes in favor are likely to still count.
‘SHE’S THE AMERICAN DREAM’
That means 26 more states will need to vote in favor of the amendment to pass.
“It didn’t take long for people to see this as an opportunity,” said John Kowal, who has written a book on the history of constitutional amendments.
“I am not aware of any precedent where a person who is publicly known and publicly used the noble title from another country has run for political office.
“I think it will be very controversial.
“England has a very strong tradition of keeping the royal family out of politics and so this is probably more intrusive than anything a royal dares to do in the UK.
“Meeting senators to campaign for a bill – here’s how she injected herself into US politics.”
As it stands, Meghan is eligible to run for office because she is an Indigenous citizen.
“She clearly seems to have progressive politics and so it is possible that she will run as a Democrat, but what if she runs as an independent?” Mr. Kowal said.

“Then you have Democrats and Republicans both eager to stop her from running using this, and maybe a rare bipartisan consensus if she runs with independent status.”
Royal experts say the possibility of Meghan running for president is not far off.
“Honestly, I don’t see this as a political issue. My husband’s family and the British Royal Family certainly don’t have any political involvement,” she said.
Tom Bower, who is currently researching the Duchess’s unauthorized biography, told Closer magazine: “The prospect of Meghan running for president is possible and I would even say it is possible. I really believe that’s where she sees herself going. ”
“Meghan embodies the American dream,” said Omid Scobie, co-author of In Search of Freedom, a biography with which the Duchess has collaborated.
“One day we could see Meghan become president.”
And a friend told Vanity Fair Meghan doesn’t want to give up her US citizenship “so she has the option of getting into politics”, adding that she “would seriously consider running for president”.
