Meet Tom Hutton, Oklahoma State’s oldest active college football player, kept on permanent staff

TOM HUTTON is no ordinary college football player.

The Australian player is visiting the state of Oklahoma and was a freshman at the age of 29.

At 32, he is officially the oldest active football player currently plying his trade in the NCAA.

Hutton spent much of the last decade at a carpentry trade school in Melbourne, Australia.

He played Aussie Rules and worked in a paper mill before making a dramatic move to Oklahoma four years ago.

The 6ft3 star shone in the Mid Gippsland Football League, his performances earning him a scholarship through Oklahoma State’s ProKick Australia program.

Hutton told 247Sports: “Hitting the ball is pretty natural.

“I got into the system through Pro Kick Australia.

“It’s a program that started out with the last five Ray Guy Award winners and is based in Melbourne, Victoria, which is about a two-hour drive from where I’m based.”

In his freshman season, Hutton did not have a blocked punt and helped OSU rank fourth nationally in punt return defense.

And in his 2021 junior season, the Aussie has punted 72 times for an average of 42.4 yards per punt, enough to finish third in the Big 12.

Hutton made his debut of the 2022 season for the Cowboys earlier this month, setting up a safety against Central Michigan with a perfect pin at the two-yard line.

The 32-year-old, born in 1990, is called “Pops” by his teammates and is regularly confused with an employee by fellow coaches.

He told the Wall Street Journal, “They ask, ‘Are you employees?’ literally every day.

“Now I’ve started to say, ‘Football player, Hutton.’

Players have received a “Covid year” bonus from the NCAA, with Hutton having the option to play an additional year.

But the mild-mannered Aussie will persevere – despite his fame on campus.

He continued, “I don’t take it. I’m old enough.”

Hutton may currently be the oldest player in the NCAA, but he’s far from the oldest ever.
