Meet Olivier Rioux, 7ft 5 Canadian NBA hope at IMG Academy who is officially the world’s tallest teenager

OLIVIER RIOUX stands out from the crowd both on and off the basketball court.

The Quebec high school student has been named the world’s tallest teenager by Guinness World Records.

The 16-year-old is an incredible 227 cm tall and is currently attending the sports-oriented preparatory school IMG Academy in Florida.

And he has big ambitions to make it into pro sports in hopes of following in the footsteps of IMG alumni Trevon Duval and Jonathan Isaac.

Rioux was born in Montreal, Canada in 2006 and both of his parents are well over 1.80m tall.

Father Jean-Francois is an impressive 6ft 8, mother Anne Gariepy 6ft 1.

But there was no real indication from an early age that he would break the 7-foot mark at just thirteen, as doctors initially believed he would reach around 6ft5.

They were dead wrong, because Olivier grows about 10cm a year – and he’s probably not done yet.

Rioux recalls showing up to basketball games at the age of five and opponents questioning his true age due to his already impressive height.

Away from the game, the world’s tallest teenager needs a few minor everyday adjustments to keep it comfortable.

His parents have had to remodel their home to include taller tabletops and ceilings, while it’s difficult to find sneakers to fit Olivier’s huge feet.

‘SO MANY QUESTIONS…’

And on a family trip to Cuba, stunned tourists lined up at the Rioux resort just to take a picture with him.

On the pitch, however, Olivier really caught the eye, with his first taste of fame after going viral in 2018.

Back then, aged just 12, he was standing at a whopping 6ft 10 when he played with French team Frenchy Phenoms in a U12 tournament against a group of Spanish pre-teens.

Rioux towered over the other kids, showing excellent movement, shooting and diving while his undoubted talent was seen around the world.

NBA stars took note as Steph Curry responded to the viral clip with “So many questions…”

Prior to his life-changing move from Quebec to Florida, Rioux spent time training and playing at Real Madrid in Spain and College St-Jean-Vianney in Montreal.

In Spain, Rioux was pictured alongside football stars, making then-Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos look like a child in an Instagram snap.

In the summer of 2021, Olivier made the exciting move to IMG Academy and will now play the remainder of his high school career with the Ascenders.

Positioned down the middle, he has proven to be a hugely effective presence for his new team this season and hopes to catch the attention of D1 colleges.

“MUCH POTENTIAL”

His athleticism and presence have impressed his coaches, as has his ability to adapt both on and off the pitch.

Steffen Visk, Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at IMG, was immediately impressed with Rioux upon arrival.

He said: “When I first met him, I was like, ‘Man, I hope this guy comes for the full-time year.’

“Having been a part of the basketball program for a long time, I’ve seen a lot of guys over 7 feet. So it wasn’t such a big shock.

“But to see him move, to see how old he was, it was like woah, this young man has a lot of potential.”

And even though Olivier has grown so quickly, his coaches have been amazed at how well he has handled the challenges that have come with it.

Steffen continues: “[Olivier] grew very, very quickly and part of that is you lose a lot of coordination.

“You also lose the ability to move quickly, so it’s almost like he has to relearn how to be explosive like he was when he was smaller and younger.”

Rioux took the title of world’s tallest teenager from Ren Keyu, who was 15 years old and 7ft 3 tall in 2020.

If he makes it to the NBA, Rioux would be the third-greatest player of all time, even at his current height.

Romania’s Gheorghe Muresan tops the charts for tallest NBA players, with the former Bullet and Nets star standing at a gargantuan 7ft 7in.
