Medina Spirit stripped of 2021 Kentucky Derby win despite dying in December and coach suspended over failed drug test

MEDINA SPIRIT has been stripped of the 2021 Kentucky Derby championship – despite passing away from a suspected heart attack in December.
Trainer Bob Baffert was also embargoed for 90 days after the horse failed a drug test for banned drugs.
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission also fined him $7,500 (about £5,500) along with money in today’s wallet.
Mandaloun will be declared the winner of the 147th Kentucky Derby.
Medina Spirit made landfall home May 12-1 last year in a massive shock at one of the US classics.
Churchill Downs said in a statement: “Today Churchill Downs recognized Mandaloun as the winner of the 147th run of the Kentucky Derby.
“We send our congratulations to Juddmonte owner/breeder, trainer Brad Cox and jockey Florent Geroux.
“Winning the Kentucky Derby is one of the most exciting achievements in sport.
“We look forward to celebrating Mandaloun at a future date in a way that is befitting of this rare distinction.”

Churchill Downs had previously suspended Baffert for two years after the latest in a series of recent failed trials by his horses.
Medina Spirit tested positive for betamethasone last May, which is legal in Kentucky but banned on race day.
Medina Spirit passed away on December 6 after training at the Santa Anita racecourse in California.
Results released earlier this month from an autopsy on the horse showed no cause of death.
