MIAMI (CBSMiami/CNN) – The ex-girlfriend of Rep. Matt Gaetz, who is considered a key witness in the Florida Republican sex-trafficking investigation, testified Wednesday in front of a grand jury. parliamentary investigation team.
This development is the latest signal that the lengthy investigation into Gaetz is still active.
A source familiar with the case previously told CNN that the ex-girlfriend will appear before the jury.
CNN spotted the woman arriving in federal court in Orlando, Florida, with her attorney on Wednesday.
She ended her testimony in the Gaetz case and left the court.
Her attorney, Timothy Jansen, spoke briefly to reporters gathered outside the courthouse.
“All I can say is that CNN saw me and my client walk in, and I confirm that I’m here, but I can’t be reached for comment,” he said.
This woman, a former Capitol Hill employee, has been in contact with Gaetz since the summer of 2017.
Investigators are interested in that time period because it was when the congressman was accused of having sex with another woman, who was 17 at the time.

Ex-girlfriends may also be an integral part of obstruction of justice investigations as the investigation into Gaetz’s conduct heats up.
CNN reported that investigators were aware of a discussion Gaetz and an associate spoke with her in October 2020.
Legal experts say the ex-girlfriend’s testimony is a necessary step prosecutors will take before charging Gaetz and it signals federal prosecutors may be on the verge of arresting the congressman.
Any criminal charges against a sitting member of Congress would have to be approved at the highest levels of the Justice Department.
Multiple people familiar with the matter told CNN that a grand jury – a group of parishioners listening to evidence presented by prosecutors behind closed doors about a potential crime – met in Court. Young Federal Annex Court George C. on the Gaetz investigation.
A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.
Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged.
Gaetz’s attorneys said in a statement Wednesday that they see “no credible basis” to charge Gaetz and said they “remain steadfast in our commitment to challenge all allegation with the truth and the law.”
