Matt Fitzpatrick has a chance to become the first Englishman to win the PGA Championship in over 100 years

MATT FITZPATRICK is poised to become the first English golfer to win the USPGA championship in more than a hundred years after competing at Southern Hills.

And if Fitzptarick celebrates his first Major triumph, it would be the second time he has bridged a gap of more than a century to win one of the game’s biggest prizes.

The Sheffield golfer became the first Englishman to win the US amateur title in 102 years when he triumphed at the event in 2013.

Now he has the chance to become England’s first PGFA champion since Jim Barnes won the Wanamaker Trophy for the second time in 1919.

The 27-year-old Fitzpatrick managed three rounds in the 60s when he hit three-under par and lifted 67 to six-under for the tournament, three shots behind leader Mito Pereira – the Chilean man is playing his second major.

Amazingly, the top golfers on the leaderboard have yet to win a PGA Tour event together.

But Fitzptarick has finished second twice in the States, while the man who shares second place with him, Will Zatoris, finished second at last year’s Masters.

The England ace commented: “I’m absolutely thrilled – I’ve never had the chance to win a Major before so it’s definitely going to be an amazing experience.

“But although my best major finish six years ago was seventh at the Masters, I’ve won the DP World Tour Championship twice, as well as many other big events in Europe, so I know how to get across the finish line.

“I have my emotions well under control today. After the bogey on the first two holes, I could have vented my frustration, but I held on well and was very patient.

“I holed a bunker shot for my first birdie on a five followed by a great putt on a six and played brilliant golf when I came in.

“I finished birdie-birdie and that at 18 was a real bonus. I hit three woods, four irons there and it’s one of those holes where you like to go off on a par.

“But I hit two great shots and made a really nice downhill putt off the back of the green. If I can continue like this, I have every chance.” Matt Fitzpatrick has a chance to become the first Englishman to win the PGA Championship in over 100 years
