Matt Damon: Kevin Smith Saved ‘Good Will Hunting’

The actor said opportunities to make the film “evaporated”, before Smith stepped forward to defend him and Ben Affleck.

During his press tour for “The Tender Bar,” Ben Affleck recently sat down for an interview with a very sympathetic journalist: Matt Damon. The actor was interview by his childhood friend and longtime collaborator for EW, including “The Last Duel” and Affleck’s decision to give up superhero movies. But as was inevitable for the two of them, the conversation eventually turned to “Goodwill to hunt. ”

The 1997 film catapulted Affleck and Damon to Hollywood stardom, helped them win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and established them as genuine male leads. While reflecting on the film’s success with Affleck, Damon said that the film would not have been made without the help of their mutual friend. Kevin Smith.

Smith famously helped them by giving the script of “Good Will Hunting” to then-protagonist Harvey Weinstein, who went on to produce the film. But according to Damon, Smith deserves more credit than he gets for the film’s success. “Kevin also saved ‘Good Will Hunting,'” Damon told Affleck. “This is not a small note. He is the reason ‘Good Will Hunting’ was created. We died underwater, all offers evaporated.”

Affleck echoed his sentiments and regretted that he never thanked Smith on the biggest stage in film industry. “I promised him that I would thank him if we got the Oscars and quickly forgot about it,” Affleck recalls. “And then I said to him, ‘If I win again, I swear to God, I’ll thank you.’ Forgotten again. ”

While Kevin Smith never accepted his Oscar, Damon and Affleck reprized the role of “Good Will Hunting” for Smith’s 2001 comedy “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” One memorable scene shows them filming a fictional sequel titled “Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season.” Affleck still has nice things to say about Smith, calling him “funny, smart and charming”.

Affleck began his career as a frequent collaborator of Smith’s, appearing in seven of the director’s films. He has joined Matt Damon in “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” and most recently, “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.”
