She is a two-term former President of the American Association of Sex Counselors, Counselors, and Therapists.

She is also co-director of the Zucker Hillside Hospital’s Center for Human Sexuality and a former Director of the Men’s Sexual Disorders Association.

Zussman continued to practice as a sex therapist from the age of 100 until the age of 105.

She studied sex therapy under the direction of Dr. William H. Masters and Virginia E. Johnson, the inspiration for the Master of Sex series.

In the 1960s, Dr. Zussman and her husband, Leon, were invited to a presentation by Masters and Johnson, who were virtually unknown at the time.

The duo’s book, The Human Sexual Response, popularizes how sexual dysfunction is treated. Dr. Zussman said the lecture resonated something with her and her husband.

According to Zussman, the Masters and Johnson study changed the sex culture from the more modest 1950s to the “relationship frenzy” of the 1960s.

“It’s not just glamorous and it’s great to be seduced,” says Zussman. “One must almost learn how to be a good partner and have fun.”

The Zussmans were trained at the Masters and Johnson Institute. Their patients are often couples who are having trouble with their sex lives.

Together they wrote the 1979 book, Getting Married: A Couple’s Guide to Sexual Enrichment, which encouraged people to reflect on the pressures of work, family, and society affecting their closeness. how are they.

“Shirley was a pioneer in sex therapy and an outstanding role model,” said Ruth Westheimer, former program director at Planned Parenthood.

Westheimer attended a sex therapy course taught by Zussman and her husband. “They were pioneers, because she was a therapist and her husband was a gynecologist and that validated the work,” she said.

“It gives the legitimacy that sex therapists like me need. I wouldn’t be talking about orgasms if it weren’t for Shirley. ”
