Mason Mount’s shocking stats against Saints show how he was ‘eaten up’ as Kepa made more passes than the English ace under fire

CHELSEA star Mason Mount endured a terrible Saturday night against Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ poor run continued as they lost 1-0 to bottom Saints, meaning they have won just one game in ten so far this year.

West London’s biggest names failed to deliver despite a pricey January transfer window with some damning stats.

Mount was among the most disappointing players against Ruben Selles’ men.

The versatile forward failed to win any of his six ground duels and failed both of his take-ons.

The England international was also unsuccessful in his only tackle attempt, failing to complete a cross.

The 24-year-old completed eight of 13 passes, most of them backwards, before being substituted for Kai Havertz in the 64th minute.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga proved to be the better passer as he completed all of his 14 attempts.

That drew heavy criticism from Paul Merson, who claimed Mount was ‘eaten up’ against Southampton.

Merson said: “I don’t see this stopping, I don’t.

“They bought a truckload of individuals I’m afraid. They didn’t buy anyone for the team, they’re all dribblers.

“Forget Enzo Fernandez, he’s a top player, he’s a defensive midfielder, but the others… Mount played today and he got eaten up.

“People dribbled, there were no game phases.

“Only when Havertz came and started playing [Joao] Felix and [Raheem] Sterling that there were game passages. But I don’t see that stopping.”
