Mason Greenwood pictured arriving in court to face charges of attempted rape, assault and behavior control

MASON Greenwood arrived in court today on charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behavior.

The 21-year-old Man Utd striker was held in custody for two nights after being charged on Saturday.

Greenwood was driven into Greater Manchester Magistrates’ Court in a prison van today.

Police descended on the footballer’s £15,000-a-month Trafford home on Saturday.

He was held on suspicion of having had contact with his alleged victim in violation of his bail conditions.

Prosecutors then authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge the footballer.

The alleged acts concern a woman and are said to have occurred between December 1, 2018 and October 15, 2022.

Greenwood is accused of forcibly controlling and attempting to rape the alleged victim for nearly four years on October 21, 2021.

He is also said to have attacked her on December 12, 2021 and December 31, 2021.

Attempted rape carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if convicted.

The striker has been waiting to know his fate since he was first arrested in January this year.

He spent three nights in detention after being arrested at his rented home.

Greenwood was released on bail on February 2 and has kept a relatively low profile ever since.

He was originally scheduled to answer his bail on April 30, but the decision was delayed after a court hearing in June.

At the time, the Utd striker was suspended but was still receiving his £75,000-a-week salary.

The club released a statement yesterday after Greenwood’s charges were announced.

A spokesman said: “Manchester United notes that prosecutors have filed criminal charges against Mason Greenwood.

“He remains suspended from the club until the court case is completed.”

Greenwood was removed from FIFA 22 following the allegations and dropped by sponsor Nike.

Football Manager 2022 has also confirmed that he will not appear in the game.

All merchandise bearing the No 11’s name has been removed from the official Utd website and team-mates have unfollowed him on Instagram.

Greenwood’s promising national and international career remains in jeopardy.

He last played for the Red Devils on January 22 when the team beat West Ham 1-0.

The player joined the team aged just six and rose through the ranks to secure a regular place in the first team.

In 2019 he became the youngest footballer to play for Utd in the Champions League when he arrived on the pitch aged 17.

Greenwood has played a total of 129 games for the Red Devils and has scored 35 goals.

In 2020, England manager Gareth Southgate gave the striker his first cap when Greenwood came on as a substitute in the 1-0 win over Iceland.
