MANCHESTER United footballer Mason Greenwood is on trial today for rape after spending two nights in a police cell.

The 21-year-old forward was arrested early Saturday for allegedly breaching his bail conditions.

He was later charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior.

Greenwood, who once performed for England, is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court this morning.

He was arrested at his home in Trafford, Manchester, at 7am after being pictured with his alleged victim in his £150,000 Audi R8 in Bowdon, Cheshire last week.

Greenwood, who earns £75,000 a week, was suspended from United following his arrest in January after a woman claimed on social media that he had raped and assaulted her.

A statement from the club on Saturday night said: “Manchester United notes that prosecutors have filed criminal charges against Mason Greenwood.

“He remains suspended from the club pending the completion of the court case.”
