Her son, Jack Krane, told TMZ that Sally was diagnosed with dementia around 2017 and hasn’t been doing well for the past few years.

Jack said he last saw her on Wednesday night, when he said his final goodbyes.

Sally’s performance as “Hot Lips” in the hit movie M*A*S*H, earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

After M*A*S*H – she starred in the film, not the series – she appeared in several of the director’s projects, including the films Brewster McCloud, Welcome to LA, The Player and Prêt -ah-Porter.

Sally also had a memorable starring role in 1986’s Back to School, playing comedian Rodney Dangerfield.

“Here’s one thing I brag about in my life: Director [Alan Metter] said he feels that I have helped Rodney become a human, can be trusted in a relationship. Because I just have to love him and be honest with it,” Sally said in 2016 on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.

Sally said that when fans meet her in public, they will always refer to her as her most notable role, “Hot Lips”.

She will also be famously remembered for her role as Dr. Elizabeth Dehner in the third episode of “Star Trek.”

When her character sacrificed her life in the classic sci-fi movie, her dying words to Captain Kirk were, “I’m sorry… you can’t know the feeling… almost a god”.

Sally was born on June 2, 1937 in Long Beach, California and has spent most of her life in the limelight.

She once said, “I’ve been singing and acting since the womb.”

The news of her death affected friends and colleagues.

Podcaster Marc Maron tweeted: “Sally Kellerman is radiant, beautiful, fun, and great to work with.

“She played my mother in my series ‘Maron’.” My biological mother is very flattering and a little jealous. I’m sad she’s gone. RIP”

TV writer Genner Gross added: “Sally Kellerman is 49 years old in BACK TO SCHOOL and is one of the sexiest women to ever exist.

“Her voice, her perfect timing of humor, her ability to switch between silly and smoldering and keep herself in a barracks full of Army soldiers.

“She’s a one-of-a-kind. RIP.”

And Star Trek historian Jay Stobie summed it up: “We lost one of the first members of #StarTrek family.

“My thoughts go out to Sally Kellerman’s friends and loved ones.”

Sally is survived by her son, Jack, along with daughters Hannah and Claire.
