Fort Myers residents are getting ready to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.

On Monday, hundreds of people will gather at the Dunbar Jupiter Hammon Library and will march as far as Centennial Park. The march will honor the civil rights icon on his 93rd birthday.

Everyone is invited to participate. The march will begin at 11am and will be followed by a multicultural celebration at 12pm

Organizers hope to bridge the gap and bring communities together. They say Martin Luther King Day is all about unity.

The multicultural celebration will feature live music and entertainment, vendors, employment businesses and volunteers taking surveys about the change they’d like to see in the community. their.

Dunbar Festival Committee Vice Chairman Edward Harris said that although we have come a long way, there is still a lot of work to be done.

“His vision is not over yet, that we have to keep on keeping the march going, we have to keep it ahead of our youth, especially because they need to understand the work and the work. sacrifices of our ancestors. and by their grandmothers and grandfathers that they created so that we could all be equal and so that we could all enjoy life to a much greater degree together,” Harris said.

After a year of so many divisions, Harris said he hopes everyone can come together for a common goal. “MLK Day isn’t just about Dr. King, African-Americans, if you will, it’s about everyone. It’s about the solidarity of our people, generally from city leaders to even extend to our communities. We want to be able to incorporate Cape Coral, you know, we want the local areas around people to be within walking distance from Punta Gorda, all three-county areas. ”

State Road 82 to Monroe Street and Edwards Drive will be closed for the march and will reopen around 12:15 p.m. Monday.
